Love is the Greatest

My generation

had our heads in the clouds

and our feet on foreign soil.

Our hearts and minds

produced new ideas

by the truckload.

Captain Kirk

and Mr. Spock

materialized

on our TV screens and

explored strange new galaxies

fought off threats

with really cool phasors

and beamed back up to the ship

just in time for dinner and a new delegation.

We lived LARGE
and in LIVING COLOR

Nothing seemed

out of reach.

WE touched the sky

We knew GOD

HE WAS OUR PERSONAL FRIEND.

We had ALL THE ANSWERS

TO ALL THE QUESTIONS

ever questioned.

WE ROCKED the WORLD!

OUR science would cure EVERYTHING!

We would harness the SUN

Well, we did harness it

the wind

WAIT, we did!

earth

water

fire

DID that

well, kind of sort of, not really

When did it turn?

When did our enthusiasm for LIFE

start to destroy our lives?

When did we begin to practice MAD SCIENCE

was it twelve years ago with MONSANTO

or was it before that

When did our smart become stupid?

Was it when we started cloning sheep?

When will it end

today, tomorrow, December 21st 2012?

Will we have to sit in the corner

wait

and watch out for

THE END?

Is the government

ever going to admit to what’s really going on at AREA 51

that WE are the aliens on this planet?

Is Jesus coming back?

Should we cheer and sing

when he rides in on his

white stallion

or cower

behind

a pillar?

YOU know the

pillars

we hide behind

PRIDE

LUST

indifference

VIOLENCE

PAIN

FEAR

GREED

LOVE

LOVE, the only thing worth living or dying for

well there is freedom

and happiness

and some other good stuff

like friends and family

although family can suck too.

Yes, but there is LOVE and Jesus

and flowers, mountains, trees, birds

and dogs and the deep blue sea

So there is HOPE

and she has another close friend

Truth

so maybe, just maybe

we’ll make it

to a ripe old age

in the meantime, dear

go ahead, eat another apple!
