I Trusted
When I should’ve
Suspected,
Leapt
When I should’ve
Latched,
Settled
When I should’ve
Insisted,
Avoided
When I should’ve
Tackled,
Marched
When I should’ve
Crawled,
Shrunk
When I should’ve
Stood Firm,
Cried
When I should’ve
Laughed.
Did Nothing when
Anything would’ve sufficed.
I chose the Familiar
When I should’ve
Known Better,
Missing the Whole
Point of the exercise.
…
What I Didn’t Do
I didn’t look back.
Waiver.
Remount a dead donkey.
I didn’t
Become a Porn Star
Break the Bank or
Dumpster Dive behind Mickey D’s.
I didn’t
Cure Cancer
Hijack a Milk Truck, or
solve the riddle of Time Travel.
Neither did I examine the blindfold.
Because when push comes to shove,
The metal blade spins inches from your skull,
And hope is a dim star in another dimension,
Subduing the monkey,
Smashing that infernal Piñata, and
Attaining Nirvana, is as elusive, as
Swallowing a rainbow.
